Ask A Kigali Mom - Homemade Pizza

If you've conquered the art of making dough, you have also conquered the art of making pizza. I can't believe how easy this was to make and how amazing delicious it was too! Perfect for pizza and movie nights with your family.

(The recipe is Delia Smith's Basic Pizza Dough recipe).

Basic Pizza Dough

(Enough for 1 large pizza or 2 small pizzas)

Ingredients:

  • 110ml of hand-hot water
  • Half a teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 and a half teaspoons of dried yeast
  • 225g of white (wheat) flour
  • 1 level teaspoon salt
  • 1 standard egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Steps:

First pour 75ml of the hand-hot water into a basin and whisk in the sugar, followed by the yeast. Leave the mixture on one side for 10-15 minutes whilst it froths.

Meanwhile sift the flour and salt together in a mixing bowl. Then pour in the frothy yeast mixture and the beaten egg, and mix to a dough. (You may need to add some more warm water). At the end you should have a soft, pliable dough that leaves the bowl clean.

Transfer the dough to a working surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it’s silky smooth and fairly elastic.

Replace the dough in the bowl and rub the surface all over with the oil. Then seal the bowl with cling film, or cover with a clean, damp cloth or lid, and put the dough in a warmish place to rise for about an hour (or until it has doubled in size).

Meanwhile, pre-heat your oven to 230 degrees C.

Once the dough has risen, knead it again for about 5 minutes, and then it is ready to use for pizza! Roll out the dough in whichever shape you prefer, and add your toppings: a base sauce, vegetables, meat and cheese on top. Place your pizza near the heat source in the oven and let your pizza cook for 10 - 15 mins (keep an eye on it).

Voila! Delicious, homemade pizza for you and your family.
